Meet Our Candidates

Congressman Chris Carney (PA-10)

About Chris

Chris Carney PhotoA Commander (select) in the United States Navy Reserve, Congressman Chris Carney served multiple tours overseas and was activated for operations Enduring Freedom, Noble Eagle, and Southern Watch.

After 9/11, Chris served at the Pentagon as an intelligence analyst and senior advisor on intelligence and counterterrorism issues. He coordinated counterterrorism activities in the Middle East and later worked on the integration of national-level intelligence products in an effort to destroy international terrorist networks.

Elected to Congress in 2006, Chris said of his first term, “One of my proudest moments as a Member of Congress was seeing education benefits for National Guard and Reservists become a reality. Working with Senator Bob Casey, we created legislation that became a part of the National Defense Reauthorization. Because of our work, tens of thousands of Guardsmen and Reservists now have the opportunity to receive a college education.” Chris has also worked hard to make sure that the Department of Veterans Affairs is fully-funded and is helping to bring a Veterans’ Health Care facility to his district. Chris serves on the Homeland Security Committee in the House.

In July, Congressman Carney introduced the Caregiver Tax Relief Act of 2008 (HR 6448). This bill creates a $2,500 tax credit to be used by an individual caring for an individual with long-term care needs. This legislation is something Hillary has long championed.

Chris lives in Dimock, PA with his wife Jennifer and their five children: Ryne, Sean, Seth, Keeley and Brett.

State of the Race

Chris Carney is facing one of the toughest re-elections in the House this year. The 10th District had been a Republican stronghold since the 1950s when Chris was elected in 2006. Chris' victory represented the single largest swing from Republican to Democrat vote share in the country in 2006. In a new SurveyUSA poll conducted in late August, Carney was leading the race 49-45 percent with a 4% margin of error. Chris needs our support now more than ever to protect this lead and win in November. Carney's opponent, wealthy businessman Chris Hackett has already spent more than $1.2 million on the race, including $740,000 of his own money with no end in sight. Hackett wants to privatize Social Security, dismantle Medicare, and has been endorsed by the Club for Growth.

It is Democrats like Chris, from tough Republican districts, that will help cement the majority in Congress that President Obama will need.
